Bow 2 Stern Magazine Feature

March 23, 2014 by Webmaster

bow2ster-front-cover-thumbnFrom Bow 2 Stern, Issue 1, 2014.

“The Amity Classic answers every element of her brief. When first seen you could be forgiven for thinking the boat is simply a fibreglass Couta Boat, with its gunter rig, however the real influences behind the boat were the old Moreton Bay Netting boats, and their cousins the Mullet Boats of New Zealand. Unlike the much deeper fuller Couta Boat hulls, the Amity is relatively flat bottomed. The advantage here is the boat can be floating in 200mm of water with the keel up…”

A BIG thank you to AMITY boats!

February 8, 2014 by Webmaster

131 Hull # 2 hand overWe have recently purchased a new Amity sail boat from Australiawide – the second Amity to be built and now named Porthaethwy.  We have been delighted with both the process of buying the boat and, now that we have taken delivery, with the boat itself.   While we have only been in possession of Porthaethwy for a few weeks, we are delighted with our purchase and feel that we have acquired a quality boat that will give us enjoyment for years to come.

Euan MacDonald and the other members of the team who built Porthaethwy are very attentive to detail and to the particular needs of a new boat owner.  During the construction phase Euan was in frequent contact to discuss different options and what would best suit us.  His knowledge and passion for traditional sail boats and sailing is very evident.

The team at Australiawide are friendly and generous with their time.  We also had the opportunity to meet with the boat builders and the sail maker during the process who, like Euan, have the  same enthusiasm for the new Amity.

The post sales service is excellent.  Euan and the team are continuing to ensure that any slight adjustments required are undertaken (not that there have been many of these).

We look forward to many happy days sailing on Moreton Bay and to maintaining contact with those who have been involved in providing us with our new boat.

An amazingly versatile small yacht

October 27, 2013 by Webmaster

gregI have recently purchased Amity number 01 Sandpiper. She was the first off the mould and has been owned and sailing by the principal and prime mover of Amity Boats, Euan MacDonald. I just love the boat. I started sailing in dinghies at age 6 have had 50 years on the water experience and I have found she is quite exceptional.

My wife and I moved to the northern Gold Coast 6 months ago. We live on the Broadwater and have a much larger classic motor-sailor, but my wife was becoming reluctant to be out on the boat because of the anxiety that traffic engendered and I was missing sailing for the simple love of sailing. I had to consider my options.

My wish list for an ideal boat included: a responsive sailing yacht, a stable boat for the non-sailors that regularly accompany me, a low maintenance vessel or an easy maintenance vessel, classic looks and some pretty timber, easily sailed solo, capable of a passage to Moreton Bay with up to 3 overnight stays, a shallow draft or better a pivot centreboard boat so that sandbanks are only a temporary annoyance, (also this would facilitate being able to sail or motor in places the “gin palaces” do not use).

Sandpiper has answered every item on my wish list. Every outing I have had the additional pleasure of compliments about her appearance and function. My wife loves the open cockpit sailing and under cover(boom-tent) for lunching. ‘Sandpiper’ is beautifully finished , sails like a witch and has the flexibility to cope with narrow shallow waterways and inexperienced passengers. I am so impressed that I have offered to provide Sandpiper as a demonstrator vessel here on the Broadwater. I am looking forward to the fleet of Amity boats steadily building.

The Wee boat with great ability

IMG_9524Sept 2013 BRIBIE CUP and Pumicestone Passage Cruise

At 20ft with a gaff rig, the Amity may not be every ones first choice for a yacht race in gale force winds, but not to be deterred Euan MacDonald and co-hort Jeremy Paterson set sail for a weekend of adventure on Amity #1 – PIPER! Heavy winds on Saturday forced a small fleet of hardened race yachts to heavily reef down before tacking north through the Bay to the finish off Bribie Island. Many skippers didn’t expect PIPER the Amity Classic to start, never mind finish. But at 2:30pm the plucky little boat rounded South Point off Bribie in over 30 knots of wind (on the nose) to finish the race.

Drama had unfolded throughout the race, with one crew member on another boat being carted off by Ambulance, and another competitor limp in under motor with a broken mast. With just 2 crew the Amity completed the course in just over 5hours with howling winds on the nose, one reef in the mainsail and small jib. “She behaved exceptionally well” Euan said “and was incredibly light on the tiller with some weather helm in gusts over 30 knots, I can’t ask for better than that”!

After presentations (PIPER came 4th) the crew dropped the mast, slipped quietly under Bribie Bridge and continued to sail up the Pumicestone Passage all the way up to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast! Sleeping in swags on board and on the banks of the Pumicestone Passage, the three day adventure was a real testament to how these small yachts can safely be used for fun and adventure.

The Amity is far from a prettied up day-sailer. Amity boats are designed for expeditions, they are solidly built in fiberglass and naturally self righting. What’s more they are self-bailing and with collision bulkhead and sealed buoyancy also unsinkable. With that kind of confidence Amity Boats are the natural choice for those seeking adventure in a small package.

Warning to those considering – Buying boats from USA

December 1, 2011 by Webmaster

Grey Imports – Buyer Beware

What Is a Grey Import?

Marine dealers and brokers are authorised to sell specific product brands in Australia.  This product must comply with Australian standards.  Product which is sold through non-authorised channels is known as a ‘grey or parallel import’.

Grey (or parallel) imports may seem very cheap on the surface.  However, like most things that seem too good to be true, imported product may be far from cheap when compliance issues need to be addressed.

You’re the importer – You’re responsible.

By importing a boat, PWC or engine into Australia, you are taking on a number of additional liabilities.  You become responsible, personally, for all the compliance issues associated with the product.

In the event of a failure – be it safety or related to build standards or emissions – YOU will be the one, as the importer, bearing sole liability for compliance.  In the event of an accident the skipper and/or owner of the vessel may carry very serious liability under Australian law.

CAN YOU AFFORD TO TAKE THIS RISK?

Is it Safe?

Grey Imports raise both financial and safety concerns for buyers.

As these products are being imported without the manufacturers consent they will not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Grey imported products may not be subject to the same thorough safety check that authorised product are. This means you could potentially be putting your family and yourself at risk through use.

It is important to remember that whilst the product may meet the safety requirements in its country of origin it does not mean that it will meet the minimum safety requirements here in Australia.

Is it Legal?

Products are manufactured for specific markets (or regions).  This product is manufactured to comply with standards and specifications of each market.

Product which is imported into Australia must be assessed against Australian Regulations and Standards.

Much of the product currently being imported is NOT compliant.

Australian regulations and standards are there for a reason.  Non compliant product needs to be viewed as substandard unless measures are taken to bring it into compliance.

If a product cannot be brought into compliance it should not be sold, imported or even used within Australia.

Is it Worth It?

Have you given careful consideration to the true costs of importing a boat, PWC or engine?  There is more to it than the price on the window.

After Sales Support.  Most Authorised Dealers and Brokers are not permitted to provide after sale support such as servicing or spare parts to grey imports.  This often means that any servicing and maintenance cannot be performed by factory trained professionals.

Resale.  Grey and parallel imports often have very low or no value at the time of resale when  compared to authorised products.

Product liability for consumer advisories such as product safety recall and warranty support.  Authorised Dealers and Brokers provide this support.  Unauthorised channels often do not.

Many insurance companies will not cover a claim if the product is found to be non-compliant against Australian standards.  You could be uninsured.

Check the total cost of bringing the product into the country – you might be suprised to find there are costs and taxes in addition to the purchase price.

What Should You Look For?

Key compliance issues you should consider when evaluating imported products manufactured for overseas markets:

For Vessels:

  • Electrical Safety Compliance. All electrical systems must comply with Australian Standards and Regulations. “Certified Safe” does not equal compliant.
  • Build specifications such as floatation standards, build standards and safety compliance – check to see that Australian Standards are being complied with. If an accident occurs the skipper and/or owner of the vessel may carry very serious liability under Australian law.

For Power Plants (inboard/outboard motors; jet skis and electronic equipment):

  • C-tick Certification under the Australian Communications Management Authority. This is a mandatory requirement for product sold in Australia.

For Trailers:

  • Australian Design Rule (ADR) Compliance. No trailer is permitted on Australian roads unless it complies with this rule.

Why buy from an Authorised Dealer?

When you purchase your new Boat, PWC or Engine you can be assured that:

  • You will receive full after sales support including warranty support, servicing and maintenance.
  • Your product will comply with the standards and specifications unique to the Australian market.
  • Your product will meet Australian Build Specifications including floatation standards, build standards and safety compliance.
  • All electrical systems will comply with Australian Standards and Regulations.
  • All product will possess C-tick Certification.
  • Your trailer will be Australian Design Rule compliant.
  • You will own a quality product, provided by a quality dealer AND be free to enjoy quality time on the water without the worry of what may go wrong with your ‘cheap’ import.

Not sure if you are purchasing from an authorised dealer?  Please contact your local state Boating Industry Association which can assist with your enquiry.

Over 100 yachts are about to contest for the famed St Helena Cup, which has evolved into the largest and one of the most fun sailing weekends in S E QLD.  The Australiawide boys are prepared and ready to defend their crown, last year we won Best Individual Yacht and the Teams event which includes the St Helena Cup.  CHERANA our Tasman Seabird is ready for action and our Team mates PAGAN (Peter Kerr) and FAIRWIND (Les Brown) make up the B.O.T.Y TEAM.  Buggered Old Timber Yacht club.  This year CHERANA and PAGAN will also enter under IRC and race with the much more modern yachts.  Undoubtably the two oldest yachts on the course both PAGAN and CHERANA are extremely evenly matched.  CHERANA famed for winnng the Sydney Hobart and PAGAN for winning the Brisbane to Gladstone.  More recently PAGAN has dominated our private grudge match so no pressure CHERANA boys!!  Go the GREEN!
